My fiancé, a computer engineer specializing in complex systems, has found his niche in the burgeoning world of AI, a space where his creative and technical selves converge harmoniously. From the dawn of our relationship, he introduced me to the phrase “Fractally Self Similar,” a term we’ve affectionately woven into the narrative of our lives, recognizing patterns that repeat at different scales and magnify the essence of our shared experiences.

The principle of “fractally self-similar” structures—where smaller components echo the larger whole—is prevalent in fractals, a mesmerizing blend of mathematics, nature, and art.

This concept became profoundly personal through our journey with IVF. Much like the art I create, our IVF cycle mirrored my sketching process: abundant in its initial yield, rigorous in refinement, and ultimately yielding a precious few robust creations.

Starting with sixteen, much like the sketches I draw out in abundance, we witnessed a precipitous drop post-fertilization, a narrative of extremes that paralleled our all-or-nothing approach to life. The subsequent stages mirrored my artistic process—refinement and careful cultivation led to eight promising blastocysts, akin to my sketches that evolve into more defined images. And in the final act of selection, akin to adding the defining strokes to a piece of art, we were left with four chromosomally perfect embryos. Four masterpieces, or in our case, future possibilities, preserved and waiting for their moment.

This pattern, this fractally self-similar rhythm, is the dance of creation that reverberates through art, life, and technology. It’s no surprise, then, that AI could deftly orchestrate visuals rich with fractal elements. My initial experiments with AI and fractal aesthetics focused on insects—creatures inherently adorned with fractal forms.

The resulting images were nothing short of museum-worthy. The AI mastered the interplay of light and shadow on stone, elevating the natural fractal architecture to something sublime. If ever there was a testament to the synergy of art and technology, fractals stand as a compelling emblem—a potent representation of their beautiful union.

Through the lens of AI, we explore a world where the recursive beauty of fractals is not just understood but celebrated. It’s a space where the iterative loops of life, the branching choices of art, and the binary codes of technology interlace, crafting a tapestry rich with complexity and unity—a fractal symphony of creation.
