Noir Duets and Using AI to expand on Gothic Soulmate aesthetics

My art has often gravitated towards the depiction of couples, a projection of the union I yearned for as a young adult.

These pairs existed in a realm crafted from stark contrasts of black and white, a digital canvas where I explored inky digital mediums in the early 2000’s of romantic duos. Through these works, I sought to express an innate desire for companionship, a narrative of souls intertwined in silent understanding.

When AI entered my artistic process, it understood and expanded upon these themes, adding layers I hadn’t anticipated. The gothic element of shadowed eyes it introduced spoke volumes—a new visual language that captured the mysterious bond between two beings. The AI-generated couples, draped in darkness, were the epitome of the post-punk aesthetic I cherished, a perfect blend of my sensibilities and the machine’s emerging creativity.

Incorporating the act of smoking into these vignettes brought a raw, visceral quality to the work. It was an action loaded with duality—repulsion and attraction, isolation and camaraderie. The smoke, curling and drifting, became a character of its own, a visual metaphor for the fleeting nature of connection and the smoldering ember of hope in finding a kindred spirit.

Moreover, the AI was recklessly abstract, something I seek to explore more of in my own work. Too often it’s easier to depict what is there rather than be suggestive in your visual language.

My hope for these initial studies is to translate them back into the real world using oil and canvas.
